When should I remove wisdom teeth?

I had some pain and I thought it was from my wisdom teeth coming in. My dentist did some x-rays and said my wisdom teeth are sideways, but that the pain was from a cavity. He filled it and told me not to worry about the wisdom teeth. I can’t help it though. If they’re sideways shouldn’t I go ahead and get them out before they cause any problems?  I usually ask my parents these kind of things, but they’re going to be out of the country for the next month and will have their phones off (I’m 18).  What do you think I should do?

Lindsey,

I’m going to agree with you instead of your dentist. If your wisdom teeth are sideways, there is not way they will come in properly. Why wait for the trouble. Plus, the older you get, the chances for complications on wisdom teeth extractions go up significantly.

Not all dentists do wisdom teeth, so he might not want to recommend anything for them. I say just go ahead and call an oral surgeon and tell them you want to have your wisdom teeth out. You may want to wait until your parents are back in the country though, and can be there to help you.
