So what are the chances I can get my wisdom teeth out and have the swelling out after one day? I’ve got school pictures the next day and I don’t want to look like Mr. Potato head.

Jerry,
You gave me quite a mental picture there. The amount of swelling you have will depend on the type of extractions you’re having. Are you having simple extractions just to remove your wisdom teeth, or do you have impacted wisdom teeth and need surgical extractions?
The simple extractions aren’t that bad. Sometimes there isn’t any swelling. If you need surgical extractions you may have between three and five days of swelling. There are some things you can do to help reduce the swelling, but it will not be completely gone. However, either way, you’re not likely to look like the reincarnation of Mr. Potato Head.
Tips for reducing swelling:
- Use ice packs for the first 24 hours and then heat after that.
- Keep your head propped up instead of flat when you’re sleeping to help with bleeding.
- Take anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen. Ask your dentist what is the right dosage for your age and weight.
- Eat soft foods after the extractions
- Don’t use a straw, because that will interfere with the blood clot.
